Before 1987, brothers
Rand and Robyn Miller were leading very separate lives. Rand, the eldest,
was a computer programmer at a bank in Texas while Robyn was studying
anthropology in Washington States.
Being a programmer and a father, Rand had an interest in developing high
quality children's software. After sharing this vision (and some software)
with Robyn, they both began work on their first collaboration: The Manhole.
In 1988, when it was released, The Manhole stood out in terms of it's
unique and playful graphics and sound. But more importantly,it forged
new ground in the area of interactive worlds.The Manhole was awarded Best
New Use of a Computer by the Software Publishers Association in 1988.
It was quickly followed by a CD-ROM version,the first entertainment CD-ROM
ever released.
After creating two more award winning software titles for children, Cosmic
Osmo and Spelunx,the Millers were ready to start a project that would
put all of their acquired skills to the test. They were ready to meet
the challenge of creating a world that appealed to grown-ups.
A team was assembled and headquarters established in a garage to get started
with the monumebtal task. The project, entitled Myst, took two years to
complete and was released in September 1993.
In the four years since its release, Myst has sold over 4 million copes
worldwide, making it the best selling CD-ROM game of all time. It has
received awards too numerous to mention.
Myst generated an enormous fan following who anxiously waited for a Sequel.
In October of 1997, Riven was released.Riven which took four years, millions
of dollars, and a talented group of thirty employees to create, quickly
became the fastest selling entertainment title ever.
The expectations for Riven were high and it seems as though Cyan met those
expectations and once again set a new standard for entertainment titles. |
